My Story

Betty earned her Culinary Arts degree from Los Angeles Trade Technical College and has studied at Culinary Institute of America, Le Cordon Bleu and UCLA Extension.

Betty cultivated her food and wine pairing skills during her tenure as Chef for the Jesuit Community of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles through planning daily meals, special events and celebration feasts.  Her wine experiences were also enhanced through creating catering events over the years.

While living in Los Angeles, her signature seafood gumbo won a local restaurant Mardi Gras cook-off which awarded her round trip tickets to New Orleans.  She has also cooked for numerous celebrities - one of the most memorable being Mohammed Ali whose autograph she prizes.

Chef Betty has written food and wine articles for The Gem newspaper of La Quinta while working as the Wine Specialist at Jules Market in the same city.  Betty provided guidance and advice for customers in their wine and liquor selections.  She appeared on KMIR Desert Living with Bryan Gallyot - mixing Coachella Fest drink specials and also showcasing the sold out 2019 Palm Springs Women's Week Food and Wine event, which she co-chaired.

Betty also recently appeared on a KESQ segment:

2021 Greater Palm Springs Pride honored Betty as Volunteer of the Year for her work with the L-Fund.  From 2013 to 2021 Betty served as a  board member of The L-Fund of Palm Springs,  a local 501©(3) which provide grants for emergencies, education and the arts for Lesbians.   Her culinary expertise was instrumental in the creation of the original gala fundraiser known as the Gumbo Gala (now The Gala).

Betty loves organic gardening and food- styling, reading, writing and discussing food.  She also prepares plant based options and  baking is one of her passions.   Frequently sought after desserts include: Coconut Cake with Pineapple Filing, Ginger Shortbread cookies, Banana Pudding and Maple Spiced Sweet Potato Pie.

Italy and Spain have been Betty’s most enjoyable travel destinations to date and she looks forward to resuming her worldwide travels in the near future.

Betty lives in La Quinta, California with her wife of 8 years Terilyn McClary.
